Make crispy French toast sticks quickly in the air fryer with a sweet cinnamon sugar coating.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices thick-cut bread (Texas toast or brioche recommended)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (for egg mixture)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (for coating)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Cut each slice of bread into three equal sticks.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 tablespoon of sugar until combined.
  3. In a separate small bowl, mix the 1/2 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon cinnamon for the coating.
  4. Dip each bread stick into the egg mixture, allowing excess to drip off. Do not soak the bread.
  5. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  6. Place the dipped sticks in a single layer in the air fryer basket, ensuring they do not overlap. You may need to work in batches.
  7. Lightly spray the tops of the sticks with cooking spray.
  8. Air fry at 375°F (190°C) for 6 minutes.
  9. Flip the sticks, spray the second side lightly, and air fry for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Immediately transfer the hot sticks to the cinnamon sugar mixture and toss gently to coat evenly.
  11. Serve warm with maple syrup or fruit for dipping.

Notes

  • For best results, use slightly stale bread; it absorbs the custard better without becoming soggy.
  • If you prefer a crispier exterior, you can lightly dust the dipped sticks with a small amount of flour before dipping them in the egg mixture.
  • You can prepare the sticks (dipped but not cooked) on a parchment-lined tray and freeze them. Cook directly from frozen, adding 2-3 minutes to the total cook time.
