Make a rich, flavorful onion dip from scratch by slowly caramelizing onions for deep, sweet flavor, avoiding packaged mixes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
  • 1 cup sour cream, full fat, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise, full fat
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh chives, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes. Keep the heat low to prevent burning. Continue cooking for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions are deep brown, soft, and sweet.
  3. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the fresh thyme and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 30 minutes.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine the room-temperature sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Mix until smooth.
  5. Fold the cooled caramelized onions into the sour cream mixture. Mix gently until just combined.
  6. Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  7. Before serving, taste and adjust salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chives.

Notes

  • For a quicker, less intense flavor, you can skip the long caramelization and sauté the onions for 15 minutes until soft, then proceed with the recipe.
  • If you prefer a hot dip, mix the ingredients and bake in an oven-safe dish at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes until heated through.
  • Use Vidalia onions if you want an even sweeter base flavor for the caramelization.
