Make this rich, fudgy chocolate bread in one bowl for a simple, decadent treat perfect for breakfast or dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water or hot brewed coffee
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for batter)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate fudge sauce (for swirl)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, salt, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until fully combined. This is your one-bowl start.
  3. Add the eggs, vegetable oil, buttermilk, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix with a whisk or rubber spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Carefully pour the hot water or coffee into the batter and mix until smooth. The batter will be thin.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Drizzle half of the fudge sauce over the batter. Pour the remaining batter on top, then drizzle the remaining fudge sauce over the top layer. Use a knife to gently swirl the sauce into the batter.
  7. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
  8. Let the bread cool in the pan for 15 minutes before inverting it onto a wire rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy your decadent chocolate loaf.

Notes

  • Using hot coffee instead of hot water deepens the chocolate flavor without making the bread taste like coffee.
  • For an extra fudgy texture, use a high-quality dark cocoa powder.
  • This bread is best eaten within three days, stored tightly wrapped at room temperature.
