Make this classic Salisbury Steak recipe for a hearty, comforting meal. Juicy beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy are perfect for a satisfying weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, gently mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Do not overmix.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 equal oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  4. Add the chopped onion and sliced mushrooms to the same skillet. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and mushrooms. Stir constantly for 1 minute to cook out the raw flour taste.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until the mixture is smooth. Stir in the dried thyme and Dijon mustard. Bring the gravy to a simmer.
  7. Return the beef patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy.
  8. Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  9. Serve the Salisbury Steak immediately over mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • For an even easier weeknight meal, prepare this recipe in a slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours after browning the patties and sautéing the vegetables.
  • If you want a deeper flavor in your gravy, use homemade beef broth instead of store-bought.
  • This recipe is a great budget friendly dinner option that feels special.
