Make this easy Hanky Panky recipe, a retro party favorite loaded with savory sausage, cream cheese, and cheddar baked on pumpernickel bread. It is a simple, crowd-pleasing finger food perfect for game days or holiday entertaining.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk sausage (pork or beef)
  • 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package small pumpernickel bread slices (or rye bread)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage, breaking it up as it cooks, until it is fully browned. Drain off any excess grease completely.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine the cooked sausage, softened cream cheese, cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are fully incorporated into a thick spread.
  4. Place the pumpernickel bread slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Spoon a generous amount of the sausage and cheese mixture onto each bread slice. Press the mixture down lightly.
  6. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the edges of the bread are lightly toasted.
  7. Serve these savory bites warm immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute Velveeta cheese for the cheddar and cream cheese combination for an even creamier texture, if you prefer.
  • If you do not have pumpernickel, use small slices of rye bread or sturdy crackers as the base for these party finger foods.
  • This recipe makes a fantastic cheesy meat dip if you skip the bread and serve the mixture warm with tortilla chips.
