Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup finely chopped apples (about 1 medium apple)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Gently fold in the chopped apples.
  5. In a deep skillet or Dutch oven, heat about 2-3 inches of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  6. Carefully drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for 3-4 minutes per side, until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Remove the fritters with a slotted spoon and place them on a wire rack set over paper towels to drain.
  8. While the fritters are still warm, prepare the glaze by whisking together the powdered sugar, milk, and maple syrup in a small bowl until smooth.
  9. Drizzle the maple glaze over the warm fritters.

Notes

  • For the best texture, use apples that hold their shape well when cooked, such as Honeycrisp or Fuji.
  • Ensure the oil is at the correct temperature to prevent the fritters from becoming greasy or burning.
  • You can adjust the amount of milk in the glaze to reach your desired consistency.
