Make the best party appetizer with this creamy French onion dip recipe featuring deeply caramelized onions. This homemade dip delivers gourmet flavor perfect for game day or any gathering.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Pinch of sugar (optional, to aid caramelization)

Instructions

  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to coat them in the fat.
  3. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, for 35 to 45 minutes until they are deep golden brown and fully caramelized. Add the pinch of sugar halfway through if the onions are not browning well.
  4. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
  5. In a medium bowl, combine the cooled caramelized onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  6. Mix all ingredients together until they are fully combined and the dip is creamy.
  7. Cover the dip and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
  8. Serve your homemade onion dip cold with chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.

Notes

  • For the creamiest texture, use full-fat sour cream and mayonnaise.
  • If you are short on time, you can substitute the caramelized onions with 1 packet of dry onion soup mix stirred into the dairy base, but the flavor will not be as deep.
  • This dip tastes best when made a day ahead, so plan your prep time accordingly.
