Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) challah or brioche bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and place them in a large bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Gently toss to coat.
  4. Stir in the fresh blueberries.
  5. Pour the mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, and sliced almonds to create a crumble topping.
  7. Sprinkle the almond crumble evenly over the top of the French toast bake.
  8. Cover the baking dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 8 hours.
  9. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  10. Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the bake is golden brown and set in the center.
  11. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier top, you can uncover the bake for the last 10-15 minutes of baking.
  • Serve with your favorite syrup, whipped cream, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
  • If you don’t have challah or brioche, French bread or even a sturdy white bread can be used.
