Make this hearty, cheesy breakfast pizza using crescent roll dough for a quick Southern-style comfort meal perfect for brunch.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 lb ground breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk, warmed
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Unroll the crescent dough and press it into a 12-inch circle on a lightly greased pizza pan or baking sheet. Bake the crust for 8 minutes until lightly golden. Remove from the oven.
  2. While the crust bakes, cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat, breaking it up as it cooks until fully browned. Drain off all but 2 tablespoons of the sausage grease.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Sprinkle the flour over the sausage and grease mixture. Stir constantly for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly whisk in the warm milk until the mixture is smooth. Continue cooking, stirring often, until the gravy thickens enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  5. Stir in the salt and pepper. Remove the gravy from the heat and stir in 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese until melted.
  6. Spread the sausage gravy evenly over the partially baked crust.
  7. In a small skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Crack the eggs into the skillet and cook them sunny-side up until the whites are set but the yolks are still slightly runny (about 3 minutes).
  8. Carefully place the 4 cooked eggs on top of the gravy layer.
  9. Sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese over the top.
  10. Bake for an additional 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the egg yolks are cooked to your preference. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing.

Notes

  • For a crispier crust, lightly brush the edges of the dough with melted butter before the initial bake.
  • If you prefer scrambled eggs, mix 4 eggs with 2 tablespoons of milk, pour over the gravy before the final bake, and cook until set.
  • Use a good quality sharp cheddar for the best flavor contrast with the rich gravy.
