Make tender, flavorful pulled pork using a slow cooker with a sticky honey garlic sauce. This recipe is simple to prepare and perfect for sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed
  • 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup water or chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for thickening)

Instructions

  1. Place the pork shoulder in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, pepper, salt, minced garlic, and water or broth to create the sauce.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 8 to 10 hours, or on HIGH for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is very tender and easily shreds with a fork.
  5. Carefully remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a large cutting board or baking sheet. Discard any large pieces of fat.
  6. Shred the pork using two forks.
  7. To thicken the sauce: Skim any excess fat from the liquid remaining in the slow cooker. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with 3 tablespoons of cold water until smooth. Stir this slurry into the liquid in the slow cooker.
  8. Cook the sauce on HIGH for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens into a glaze.
  9. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it well with the thickened honey garlic sauce until fully coated.
  10. Serve immediately over buns or rice.

Notes

  • For the best flavor, allow the pork to cook on the LOW setting for the full duration.
  • If you prefer a stickier glaze, you can place the shredded pork and sauce under the broiler for 3 to 5 minutes after coating, watching closely to prevent burning.
  • This pork freezes well for later use in tacos or salads.
