A recipe for homemade black bean burger patties featuring a distinct smoky flavor, designed to hold their shape during cooking.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (or gluten-free oats)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon chipotle powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke (optional, for intense flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg (or flax egg substitute for vegan)

Instructions

  1. Place the rinsed and drained black beans on a baking sheet lined with paper towels. Pat them very dry.
  2. Heat the olive oil in a small skillet over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Remove from heat.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the dried black beans, rolled oats, sautéed onion and garlic mixture, smoked paprika, chipotle powder, liquid smoke (if using), cumin, salt, and pepper.
  4. Use a potato masher or fork to mash the mixture until it is mostly broken down but still has some texture. Do not over-mash into a paste.
  5. Add the egg (or flax egg) to the mixture and mix well until everything is just combined. The mixture should be firm enough to shape.
  6. Divide the mixture into four equal portions. Form each portion into a patty about 3/4 inch thick.
  7. Place the formed patties on a plate lined with parchment paper and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This helps them hold their shape.
  8. Cook the patties in a lightly oiled skillet over medium heat for 5 to 7 minutes per side, until heated through and browned. Alternatively, grill over medium heat for 6 minutes per side.

Notes

  • For a gluten-free option, use certified gluten-free rolled oats.
  • If you prefer not to use liquid smoke, increase the smoked paprika to 1 1/2 teaspoons.
  • These patties freeze well after chilling; wrap individually before freezing.
